AYC DINGHY SAILING

AYC members have access to a wide range of sailing dinghies.

Come down to the club and select a vessel that suits your preference, whether you are a serious racer or you just wish to spend an hour out on the beautiful and protected waters of Falmouth Harbour. It is up to you. Chat with Karl or one of the Sailing instructors and they will determine which type of vessel is best suited to your needs and your ability. The sailing instructors are available to work on your skill levels as you progress.

Mum, Dad and the kids can enjoy a fun time in our Sports 16’s Sailing Dinghy, which are user friendly and easy to handle, with plenty of amusement for all. The Laser Pico is a great boat for 2 persons, with a comfortable layout and lots of fun with main and jib.

There is an extremely active Laser sailing fleet, which has weekly training, and racing on Tuesdays and Thursdays evenings and Saturday mornings. This is open to all members and is quite competitive. The wide, open, flat waters of Falmouth Harbour are ideal for this. On some occasions there is a race to English Harbour where your open water skills are to be tested against the trade winds and swells of the Atlantic ocean, making for a thrilling return sail down wind, and surfing the large swells, before entering the protected waters of Falmouth Harbour once again for the beat to the finish.

Optimist Sailing has taken a strong hold of the Antigua Yacht Club. There is nothing better then seeing a young child take to the water in command of their vessel. The confidence that they build on the water, making all their own decisions, dealing with the elements, acknowledging and respecting the environment, and most of all, having fun ,all of this will assist them to excel in life. This is the foundation of any Yacht Club, and the first step in a sailing career for children. Many of our young sailors have progress from the Optimist to take on the worlds best in the Olympic Games, The Volvo Round the World Ocean Race, America’s Cup and Super Yacht Regattas. With this in mind, the Antigua Yacht Club is looking to build a strong young team of Opti sailors with training of 3 to 4 days a week, racing on Saturday mornings and monthly regattas.

With the progression of our sailors, we are looking at moving into the more action filled sailing fleets of the Plaining Sports Dinghies. The 29ers are the intern boats to the 49ers, fast thrilling and very difficult to sail. It is our hope to build a 29er fleet so the club will have world class sailors in these classes.
